Usability testing for LiU University website

I conducted usability testing of Linköping University’s website to evaluate how prospective students navigate key information.

The goal was to identify usability issues, understand user behavior, and provide actionable recommendations to improve clarity and navigation.

Role: UX Researcher

Methods: Usability testing, observation, synthesis

Tools: in-person testing, note-taking, affinity mapping

Scope: Research study and usability evaluation

Problem

University websites contain large amounts of information, and users often struggle to find relevant content efficiently. Understanding how users interact with navigation, structure, and content is essential to improve usability and user experience.

Research process

Planning the usability tests

I defined test goals, tasks, and recruited participants.

Example tasks included:

• Finding program information

• Locating admission requirements

• Navigating between related pages

Conducting usability tests

I conducted 3 usability test sessions and observed how users interacted with the website.

Focus areas included:

• Navigation behavior
• Confusion points
• Task completion success

Synthesizing findings

Analyzed observations and identified patterns across participants.

This included:

• Identifying recurring usability issues
• Grouping observations into themes
• Prioritizing issues based on impact

Outcome

The research resulted in a prioritized list of usability issues and recommendations. These insights can support future improvements to navigation structure, labeling, and information clarity.

Reflection

This project strengthened my skills in usability testing, observation, and synthesis.

It demonstrated how structured user research can uncover usability issues and provide clear direction for improving digital products.
